The oldest of three, James grew up between the east coast and middle America, finally ending up in Texas for Junior high school, high school, and his first few years of college. Most of his youth was spent camping with the Boy Scouts, playing capture the flag while dressed in his father’s old USMC fatigues, and eventually climbing the ranks in the local high school Junior ROTC program.
After graduating high school, James attended a local community college and was awarded an Associates of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice, eyeing a potential career in law enforcement. However, after working for a Sheriff’s office as a Detention Officer for only six months, James shifted his view to his true childhood dream of joining the Marine Corps. James enlisted with an infantry contract in the spring of 1995.
James served twenty-two years as an active-duty Marine. During that time, he served ten years enlisted as an Infantryman with the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Teams Company, and as a Reconnaissance Marine and Scout/Sniper with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion and 2nd Special Operations Training Group, Special Missions Branch. In late 2002, James was selected for a commissioning program and, after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree, Officer Candidate School, and The Basic School, James was selected to serve as a Military Police Officer, which he did for twelve years. James retired from the USMC in the summer of 2017 as a Major (O-4).
While serving as a Marine Officer, James began to pursue higher education, with the possibility of ultimately teaching at the university level in mind. In addition to his Associates of Applied Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, James has completed two Master of Arts degrees, a Maters-level Graduate Certificate, and is currently dissertating for his PhD.
